False ‘new version’-message

Hello!

Lately, a lot of users got a false ‘new version’-message, linking them to this site, claiming an update was available. As I’m sure you’ve noticed, there’s no new update to be found. I really hope you’re not to disappointed about that.

The reason for this message is that the technique I’m using for update-checks, comes from a site called ‘dashboardwidgets.com’, and unfortunately, they didn’t pay for their domain a couple of weeks ago, and when homerQuotes asks for the content on certain version-number-page, it got a 404-error. As homerQuotes decides that a 404 html page is larger then the current version number (1.3), the message is displayed.

Dashboardwidget.com is now active again, and the message is not longer displayed. In the next version I will use a different solution, based on this website. Take this as a lesson, never trust anyone else to do your job for you!

See ya!

Thank you!

Response

I’ve got some great response to the latest version of homerQuotes, people seem to like especially the copy-function. Now your able to paste a great quote into your IM-client, your facebook-status or twitter message. As I mentioned earlier, some of the new Homer-graphics I’ve been working on got lost in a hard drive crash, but I will try to include at least a couple of new Homer-options in the next version.

Donations

Thank you, thank you thank you, thank you! For your generous donations! I never thought I would get this kind of response by adding a donation-option, but there are some very kind people out there who doesn’t mind paying for a little widget. The money is really appriciated, as I’m studying on a Master program on Computer Sciences and Information Technology, I live on a pretty tight budget, and any little penny is very welcome. Again, thank you!

See you soon!

Till the clouds roll by…

Alright…

Something like one and a half year since the last blog update.

This is mostly because of a hard drive crash over a year ago that destroyed a lot of the work I had done with the widget, and I really didn’t want to start all over at that time (I do have a great automatic backup system now).

Currently, I’ve started working on the widget again, from the last version, availble at apple.com, so some of the things are lost, such as the four new Homers and the ability to copy a qoute to the clipboard. I will try to recreate those features, but I’ll start by cleaning up the code (it’s really awful, not anything that would pass any sort of programming course at even a highschool level).

You can all look forward to getting a new version not to far into the future. I’ll hope to have something to show you in a couple of weeks or a month or two.

See ya!

Summer is here!

Hi everybody!

Sorry about the lack of updates the last few months, it’s been realy hectic at the University this semester. Two days ago my summer break started, so now I have all the time in the world!… But unfortuently not sufficant of an Internet provider… I’m spending my summer in “the outbacks” of sweden, and without Internet it’s kind of hard to do much on the widget. I will do my best, so please be patient! :)

So far, the copy-quote-to-clipboard-function has brought me alot of problems, working sometime but not always. There are now seven, thats right, count them if you want, seven different homers presenting the quotes. He will not be animated or joined by any of his family members… Ever…

Hope to see you all soon. Have a freakin’  nice summer, I know I will!

Love and kisses!

In the making: version 1.3

Hi!

I’m currently working on the next version of homerQuotes. There has been
some problems getting the freaking preferences to save but I hope to have
a solution soon. I want to thank all of you who gives me suggestions on
features and such, it helps!

Here are the new features in 1.3 (hopefully)

  •  More different homers, totaly seven of him
  • The choosen homer is saved and reappears after a reboot
  • A copy function (if I find a nice way to include it in the graphics)

Some things will NOT be in the next version. Some people has asked me to
add Bart, Lisa, Marge, etc. quotes to the widget. This will NEVER happen
in the HOMERquotes-widget. This is because the HOMERquotes-widget
only consists of quotes from HOMER. Maybe someday all make a
simpsonsQuotes-widget, but this will be far in the future.

I’ve got some graphics e-mailed to me, with suggestions on new homers to
display, unfortently most of theese has been of to low resulotion. If you’d
like to give me a tip or request on graphics, please send a LINK to a LARGE
image, at least 1024×768 on mail or as a comment.

Hope you don’t think I bitch too much, I really like to here what you have to say about the widget, and suggestions are always nice!

Stay tuned for the next version!

Easter – and 30,000 visitors

For the next week I will be away on easter holiday, so I will not be able to do any work on Homer for some time.

A cool thing: the homerQuotes-site has now had over 30,000 visitors! Fantastic! Yet again, a big thank you to all of you!

I’ve added a counter att the bottom of the site if you’r interested.

Have a nice Easter!

20,000 visitors!

This site has now had over 20,000 visitors! This is amazing, I never suspected this widget to be this popular.

A big THANK YOU to every single visitor, hope you enjoy the widget!

Version 1.2 release

A new release!

  • Removed some duplicates among the quotes.
  • Even better quote-handling-code
  • Changeble Homers (still a bit buggy, but it’s a start!)

Download it by clicking the ‘Download’ link above.

Current development

Thought I’d give you an update on what I’m working on right now.

The main feature for the next releas will be the ability to change the apperens of Homer in the widget. There are currently three different styles to choose from. I wont give them away at the moment, you will have to wait and se… :)

The problem I’m dealing with now is that the widget does’nt want to save the settings in the preferences-file… But I hope it will be solved soon!

A picture might be little hint on what it will look like…
